IS DHEA THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH?

I now have a digest version of this blog to be sent out once a week.

The link for receiving the digest is: Natural health Watchit is interactive so people can comment on the articles and help me get ideas for other articles. Or you can simply sign up by writing to me at webriter@verizon.net or mark_my_bailey@yahoo.com.

As we age we lose our ability to have maximum Adrenal gland function and the loss of this function leads to problems such as we normally see in aging.

DHEA as a precursor, stimulates the Adrenal gland to begin to release androgens and estrogens that start declining as we are in our 30's. Levels of natural DHEA are are reported to be low in some people with anorexia, end-stage kidney disease, type 2diabetes (non-insulin dependent diabetes), AIDS, adrenal insufficiency, and in the critically ill. Actually drugs like insulin, corticosteroids, opiates, and danazol will also deplete the body's natural production of Androgens and estrogens. It looks like a balancing act here, especially for diabetics.

Acne is a common reported side effect in clinical trials. The most common complaints in patients with HIV include fatigue, nasal congestion, and headache. In women, the most common side effects are abnormal menses, emotional changes, headache, and insomnia. There are rare reports of rapid/irregular heartbeats or palpitations. People taking DHEA supplements may be more prone to develop blood clots or liver damage.

Some of the uses for which DHEA has been used with various success:

Capsules/Tablets:
~Adrenal insufficiency/Addison's disease : 20-50mg doses taken daily by mouth for up to nine months

~Cardiovascular disease : 25mg daily for up to 12 weeks

~Crohn's disease/ulcerative colitis : 200 milligrams daily

~Depression : 30-90 milligrams per day

~Erectile dysfunction : 50mg daily

~Hypopituitarism : 50mg daily

~Muscle strength : 100mg daily for up to one year

~Obesity : 25-100mg daily for up to six months has been used

~Osteoporosis : 5-200mg daily has been used for three months.

~Schizophrenia : Up to 100mg daily for six weeks has been used.

~Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE): 20-200mg daily DHEA has been used for up to one year

Intravenous:

~Dementia (multi-infarct) : 200 milligrams of DHEA daily has been studied for multi-infarct dementia given intravenously. Safety is not established.

~Induction of labor : 10mg intravenously has been used, twice weekly after 38 weeks gestation until onset of labor.

Cream:

~Menopausal symptoms : A 10 percent cream rubbed over a 20-centimeter by 20-centimeter area on both thighs once daily has been used for vaginal discomfort associated with menopause.

~Skin aging : DHEA (5%) in ethanol:olive oil (1:2) was topically applied to buttock skin of volunteers 12 times over 4 weeks to help with skin aging in one study.

~Vaginal atrophy : 10% cream, applied to 20x20cm area on both thighs once daily has been used.

The Mayo clinic assigns the following grades to the efficasy of DHEA for the following reasons:
Adrenal insufficiency -B, Depression -B, Obesity-B, Systemic lupus erythematosus -B,
Alzheimer's disease -C, Bone density -C, Cardiovascular disease -C, Cervical cancer-C, Chronic fatigue syndrome -C, Cocaine withdrawal -C, Critical illness -C, Crohn's disease -C, HIV/AIDS -C, Menopausal disorders -C, Induction of labor -C, Infertility -C, Myotonic dystrophy -C, Psoriasis -C, Rheumatoid arthritis -C,
Schizophrenia -C, Septicemia-C, Sexual function / libido / erectile dysfunction-C,
Sjogren's syndrome -C, Skin aging -C, Fibromyalgia-D, Immune system stimulant -D,
Memory -D, Muscle strength -D,
explanation of grading: ~B Good scientific evidence for this use
~C Unclear scientific evidence for this use
~D Fair scientific evidence against this use (it may not work).

Check the source of this information of this information-the flagship of all Allopathic medicine-The Mayo Clinic.... Allopaths always think drugs work best.

However:I have seen Schizophrenics on drugs, not much help there, Also I've seen how helpful the very expensive treatments for Psoriasis are,* Not very*, so if these two examples are any indication a grade of B or C is so much better than the help you can get from conventional medicine. If the Mayo Clinic gives even grudging credit to DHEA it must have some benefit.

One word of caution/information however while wild yams are the source of DHEA the body can't just take wild yams and make useable DHEA from wild yams, it must be synthesized to function. From all the reasearch I've see this does seem t be the case.

Dr. Ray Salahian who has his own formulation of DHEA says "DO NOT TRUST ANYONE - NO MATTER WHAT THEIR CREDENTIALS - WHO SAYS A DHEA SUPPLEMENT IS SAFE IN HIGH DOSES WHEN TAKEN FOR PROLONGED PERIODS. Without a doubt, high doses of DHEA have side effects, sometimes quite serious.".

I've given you the gist of what I've found, please check out the sources for yourself and make up your own mind.

I'm eating a diet of locally grown whole fresh foods, purified water and, I'm taking :CellPower™ to cover the basics, also
FLAX SEED OIL for my colon, but of course
~Glutathione-the master antioxidant is a great helper to counteract many diabetic complications.
~4 essential minerals for diabetics
~SELENIUMhelps immune system, fights infection and aids circulation
~MAGNESIUMhelps to relax you, aids stress and muscle relaxing
~CHROMIUMimproves insulin sensitivity, and helps lower blood sugar.
~ZINC especially to help you heal.
~coconut oil

Just Stay

A nurse took the tired, anxious serviceman to the bedside.

"Your son is here," she said to the old man.

She had to repeat the words several times before the patient's eyes opened.

Heavily sedated because of the pain of his heart attack, he dimly saw the young uniformed Marine standing outside the oxygen tent. He reached out his hand. The Marine wrapped his toughened fingers around the old man's limp ones, squeezing a message of love and encouragement.

The nurse brought a chair so that the Marine could sit beside the bed.All through the night the young Marine sat there in the poorly lighted ward, holding the old man's hand and offering him words of love and strength. Occasionally, the nurse suggested that the Marine move away and rest awhile.

He refused. Whenever the nurse came into the ward, the Marine was oblivious of her and of the night noises of the hospital - the clanking of the oxygen tank, the laughter of the night staff members exchanging greetings, the cries and moans of the other patients.

Now and then she heard him say a few gentle words. The dying man said nothing, only held tightly to his son all through the night.

Along towards dawn, the old man died. The Marine released the now lifeless hand he had been holding and went to tell the nurse. While she did what she had to do, he waited.

Finally, she returned. She started to offer words of sympathy, but the Marine interrupted her.

"Who was that man?" he asked.

The nurse was startled, "He was your father," she answered.

"No, he wasn't," the Marine replied. "I never saw him before in my life."

"Then why didn't you say something when I took you to him?"

"I knew right away there had been a mistake,

but I also knew he needed his son, and his
son just wasn't here.

When I realized that he was too sick to tell

whether or not I was his son,

knowing how much he needed me, I stayed."

While working for an organization that delivers lunches to elderly shut-ins, I often take my four-year-old daughter on my afternoon rounds.

She was unfailingly intrigued by the various appliances of old age, particularly the canes, walkers and wheelchairs.

One day I found her staring at a pair of false teeth soaking in a glass. As I braced myself for the inevitable barrage of questions, she merely turned and whispered, "The tooth fairy will never believe this!"

The Indiana State Wage & Hour Department claimed he was not paying proper

"I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them," demanded the

" Well," replied the farmer, "there's my farm hand who's been with me for
3 years. I pay him $200 a week plus free room and board.

The cook has been here for 18 months, and I pay her $150 per week plus

"That's the guy I want to talk to --- the half-wit," says the agent.
"That would be me," replied the farmer.

CAROTENOIDS~BENEFITS TO HEALTH

Here are some different carotenoids, you know what they are; (1)Carotenoids are a class of natural fat-soluble pigments found principally in plants, algae, and photosynthetic bacteria, where they play a critical role in the photosynthetic process.

Here are some different classes of carotenoids
Zeaxanthin
Lutein
Beta-cryptoxanthin
Lycopene
Alpha-carotene
Trans-beta-carotene
Cis-beta-carotene

Studies have shown that low levels of Zeaxanthin and Lutein in elderly patients and have suggested a link between loss of cognitive ability and low ingestion of tomatoes and Mangoes.

To age gracefully I suggest you eat plenty of both. We all have heard of the link showing that there is a low-incidence of cancer in those who eat plenty of foods high in Lutein.

I love tomatoes and yes they have some sugar in them and yes, I'm diabetic, but I'm at the point where I'm barely diabetic, I take so little insulin and even after eating my blood sugar levels are still inside the diabetic normal range.

The problem with diabetes, I know this is a digression but bear with me here, is that the foods with the goodnesses [vits and minerals, and fiber] in them are not allowed. For instanvce they tell you to eat lots of fiber, now what's a lot? We are all supposed to eat between 12-15 grams per day, leet's see that three cups of spinach, 1 cup of brocolli, and a large apple, add a tablespoon of psyllium to water before bed and you're all set. So, a lot would be more, Now I'm not including the best sources of fiber-breads etc. because they are non-diabetic foods. So, how does the diabetic eat more of this and not eat too much?

Ok, so we are reasonably healthy and want to stay that way. We definately want to eat carotenoids: (2)"Sources include liver, whole milk, and some fortified food products. Retinol can be made into retinal and retinoic acid (other active forms of vitamin A) in the body."

Some provitamin A carotenoids have been shown to function as antioxidants in laboratory studies; however, this role has not been consistently demonstrated in humans. Antioxidants protect cells from free radicals, which are potentially damaging by-products of oxygen metabolism that may contribute to the development of some chronic diseases.

(3)Zeaxanthin has been shown to reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration
zeaxanthin is most plentiful in yellow corn, orange pepper, squash, mango, honeydew, broccoli, and egg yolks.

lycopene (which gives tomatoes, watermelons and pink grapefruit their red color) has turned into something of a media darling, mostly due to studies that have shown this carotenoid to offer protection against breast, prostate, and pancreatic cancers, as well as heart disease.

USDA study revealed that three cups of diced watermelon, taken daily, may result in blood serum lycopene and beta-carotene concentrations that are five times higher than in people who don't get a good intake of fresh fruits and vegetables. If you don't want the watermelon juice; put some heat under a tomato. Studies have shown that the body absorbs lycopene from tomatoes more efficiently when tomato dishes are heated. Also I have read that canning tomatoes doesn't significantly affect the goodnesses in tomatoes and tomato juice. Also if you cook the tomatoes with a bit of fat like cheese or meat it will increase it's absorbtion as well. Welsh Rarebit anyone?

I find that since I've been taking CellPower™ I am getting well from so many problems I've had. I do eat lots of veggies and fruits now, I think my increases interest in them is a 'side effect of taking cellpower and my atitude, I just seem to be upbeat and happy all the time, and this is from someone who has a predisposition for suicidal depression.
Some more help that I need, for weight control, is coconut oil

FACTORS IN DIABETES MANAGEMENT- SEASONAL INFLUENCES

For me, I do tend to stay pretty busy all summer and get better exercise during the summer months. Right now it's getting to where I can't be outside as much. Let's just be honest here for a minute, Even though I've lost weight, I'm still overweight and heat is hard on me. So are the mosquitoes [I must be delicious!], and at this time of year I have to be careful not to go outside too early or too late, so I'm outside during the hot parts of the day. I still get lots of work done, weeding, watering, repotting, assorted wheelbarrow chores; dragging soil and leaves from one place to another.

~~~[digression]~~~
I studied gardening and landscaping from a master gardener in Eastern Washington state, I was much younger then, but I remember at the time I wasn't very healthy; I worked very slowly. I really feel like I'm healthier now, even though I weigh more. A few years after that time in Eastern Washington I was riding a mountain bike daily-in the mountains of Idaho and got so muscular that I'm now dragging around fat and lots of [heavy] muscle, still I think being muscular even under the fat is doing me more good than bad. I believe people who were at one time very active will find it is helpful if they need to regain health after some time being sedentary. Sure it's hard to make the transition from a rocking chair to a daily regimen of exercise, but the reserves to do it are there.
~~~[/digression]~~~

I have motivation to get my home's landscaping looking nice. While we rent this house,[we going to be are buying it, but haven't signed the papers yet]and have lived here for 5 years I've always wanted to do landscaping so I had secured permission to alter what I wanted from our landlord 4 years ago. At that time we spent 8 hour days, 7 days a week every March cleaning out the existing beds, creating new beds. Trimming trees and bushes, painting the house and garage, planting and adding more gardens, building a patio, and maintenance of the 1/2 acre we've accepted as our responsibility. Each year it was something different, a new theme. My husband would groan when I'd say something like, "Honey, This year we can....".

You see he's my Manuel Labor, he carries the big bags of mulch from the car, schleps the patio pavers, and drags the trees I cut down to the woods[I was cutting them down with my bow saw until he bought a chain saw] and he likes to say, "We did that".
If you want to see some of what we've done, I've got lots of photos on this site scroll down to see older pix, photobucket. I have a lot [14 pages! of the inside of the house too, grandkids, crafty stuff...etc. just filter through those to see our home, yard, and the vacant lot next door we maintain too.

Usually I'll go out and start a project we've been talking about and if he gets intrigued he'll join in and start helping. This year he's been much more anxious to start new projects, but then he too is now taking CellPower™. He's losing weight now too, probably because I'm cooking with coconut oil
and is feeling better too. He's had a back injury and was pretty sedentary when we met, 7 years ago. Our yard work is pretty hard on him but he's had years of pain to get used to it and he's so much healthier now, even though he eats mostly meats.

No, I'm not worried about getting exercise in the Summer, I am wondering how I'll do it in winter. I find standing in one place exercising on a machine ludicrous. I have things to do and working out on a machine is just silly. Unfortunately I'm a writer and it is not a very strenuous activity. I have a shop I like to work in in the winter, but when it's really cold my poor feet get so cold standing on the icy concrete floor. I found some carpet that I laid in the garage, but it has to come up to park the car in there. My feet were; from the factory, not made to specs and they have always hurt even when I was thin, so walking for miles is out until I'm much thinner.

I haven't thought of a solution to this problem yet, but I will, I'm hoping as the diabetes fades, as it is doing, I'll be able to lose weight easier and will be lighter on my poor feet, so I will be able to walk in winter.

One thing I really have to do is cut back on my food intake even more. I always feel so hungry now, but it has to be psychological, so I will cut back more. When I was younger I remember thinking of hunger pangs as a good thing, I was losing weight every time my tummy rumbled. NO, I'm no where near being anorexic. As an infant I was waaaay overfed, I have had to battle that all my life.

~~~[digression]~~~
I was just out watering today and I noticed that I actually have figs on my figtree I planted in a pot this year. I never saw any flowers but I see little blobby things growing the 'crotches' of where the upper leaves attach to the main trunk. I was afraid it needed to be older to produce and had given up on having my favorite fruits this year again, I like them fresh but haven't had any since I was nine living in San Bernardino, California. We lived there for a year when my Father was in Viet Nam the first time[1958].
~~~[/digression]~~~

I try to keep up the house and it's up and down stairs to do laundry several times a week. Still that's not enough, and I notice when I take a day off for a short nap or reading a few chapters, I wake up not so chipper the next day.

I'll write a little and go outside and do some puttering, until I'm soaked with sweat, then come in and write some more. This won't go so well in the winter I know.

Exercising [still a dirty word in my vocabulary] is crucial for cardiovascular health too. Getting that heart pumping and flushing out the arteries is so important to keep the old body going strong.

(1)
Seasonal variation: activity in general and walking in particular
Seasonal variation in physical activity has been described in nondiabetic populations. For example, in a community-based study conducted in Michigan, the proportion of respondents reporting no leisure time physical activity was highest in the winter (32.5%) and fall (28.7%) and lowest in the spring (23.4%) and summer (17.0%) [14]. In a Massachussetts study, total MET-hours/day increased by 1.4 (SD = 8.4) among men and 1.0 (SD = 6.0) among women in July compared to January (24-hour physical activity recall) [15]. In one survey, adults who perceived weather as an impediment to walking were three to five times less likely to walk 120 minutes per week [16]. In a study conducted by Tudor-Locke and colleagues, during a one-year period of pedometer self-monitoring in South Carolina and Tennessee (25 participants, nondiabetic), participants recorded a mean of 10,082 steps/day, with 900 more steps/day during the summer compared to the winter. Interestingly, steps/day was highest in June and August, but somewhat lower in July, possibly attributable to extremely warm July temperatures in the southern American states.

Apparently walking is the exercise of choice, so unless I'm ready to quit eating altogether I'd better find some size 6-1/2 EEEE-EEE shoes and get to walking. I suppose I could just buy some pricey children's sneakers and hope for the best, kids' shoes are made wider.

Have a great day, may you be always blessed and your wallet always full, May you find fresh pasture and cool shade. Be blessed my friends!

Two bright young engineers applied for the same position at a computer company. Since they had identical qualifications, the company asked the two applicants to take a ten-question test. At the conclusion of the test, one of the applicants was called into the manager's office. "I have graded the test, and you both scored nine correct answers and got one answer wrong. Thank you for your interest, but we've decided to give the job to the other applicant."

"And why would you choose him if we both got nine questions correct?" asked the rejected applicant. "We have based our decision not on the correct answers, but on the question you missed," said the Department manager.

"And just how would one incorrect answer be better than the other?" the rejected applicant inquired.

"Simple," said the Department manager, "The other gentleman answered Question #5, 'I don't know.' Your answer to Question #5 was, 'Neither do I.'"

FLAVONOIDS

Flavonoids are in many fruits and vegetables, manifesting mostly in yellow or red/blue pigmentation.

Good sources of flavonoids Fruit: Lemons, Grapefruit, Oranges, Limes, Grapes, Cherries, Plums, Peaches, Apricots, Apples, Berries,Vegetables: Green Peppers, Yellow Peppers, Tomatoes, Onions, Broccoli, Parsley, Whole Grains: Buckwheat, Other: Bee Propolis, Green Tea, Black Tea, Peppermint, and dark chocolate (that with a cocoa content of seventy percent or greater). Well that's good news!

Flavonoids are known as "nature's biological response modifiers" because of strong evidence of their ability to modify the body's reaction to allergens, viruses, and carcinogens. They have, apparently; anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and anti-cancer activity.

Consumers and food manufacturers have become interested in flavonoids for their medicinal properties, especially in the prevention of cancers and cardiovascular disease. The beneficial effects of fruit, vegetables, and tea or even red wine have been attributed to flavonoid compounds rather than to known nutrients and vitamins.

Dr. Perricone in his book The Perricone Promise says that the more colorful the vegetation the better it is for you. By vegetation I mean recognizable food source, in plant form.

(1)
The study was conducted in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and focused on the 22 flavonoids found naturally in orange and tangerine juice.

Dr. Najla Guthrie, president of the research company, said the results are "very encouraging" that these compounds could be effective against lung cancer, prostate cancer and melanoma cells. The study also found that synthetically produced flavonoids effectively inhibited the growth of colon cancer cells.

Previous research conducted by Guthrie indicated that components found in citrus juices were shown to reduce the growth of human breast cancer cells in laboratory tests.

Dr.David Ringer of the American Cancer Society said the findings "further reinforce that flavonoids are an important class of chemo-protective compounds which are beneficial in lowering the risk for certain cancers and cardiovascular disease."

Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly, but when they lit a fire in the craft, it sank, proving once and for all that you can't have your kayak and heat it too.

Two boll weevils grew up in South Carolina. One went to Hollywood and became a famous actor. The other stayed behind in the cotton fields and never amounted to much. The second one, naturally, became known as the lesser of two weevils.

A hungry lion was roaming through the jungle looking for something to eat. He came across two men. One was sitting under a tree and reading a book; the other was typing away on his typewriter. The lion quickly pounced on the man reading the book and devoured him. Even the king of the jungle knows that readers digest and writers cramp.

Luke and Obi-Wan are in a Chinese restaurant having a meal. Skillfully using his chopsticks, Obi-Wan deftly dishes himself a large portion of noodles into his bowl, then tops it off with some chicken and cashew nuts. All this is done with consummate ease you'd expect from a Jedi Master. Anyway, poor old Luke is having a nightmare, using his chopsticks in both hands, dropping his food all over the table and eventually himself. Obi-Wan looks at Luke disapprovingly and says, "Use the forks, Luke."
