OXYGENATING CELLS....AND ANTIOXIDANTS

One means to put oxygen in; the other seems to mean to take oxygen out. It looks on the face of it like a contradiction in terms, doesn’t it? First let's look at oxygenating cells. We breath in and out all the time, our bodies need oxygen at the cellular level to live, the blood receives oxygen in the lungs and carries it all over the body, then the deoxygenated blood travels back to the lungs in our veins.

(1)"OXYGENATING THE BODY
75 trillion cells provide the body with the energy to carry out every brain function, body movement and needs of all the body systems and organ function. Each cell has only two needs to produce this energy, nutriment from food intake and oxygen.
Oxygen Starvation of cells in the body can result in: immune deficiency, cardiac symptoms, sleep and respiratory disorders, blood chemistry disturbance, intestinal problems, anxiety, depression, headaches, fatigue, stiff neck, shortness of breath, dizziness, to name but a few health problems." ...

"Does your body get the oxygen it needs?
(Adapted from a quiz by Dr. Eigi Noguchi)
Do you wake up tired, even after eight hours of sleep?
Do you sleep restlessly, waking up frequently?
Do you suffer from chronic fatigue?
Do you have poor physical endurance?
Do you tend to be moody and irritable?
Are you susceptible to colds and the flu?
Do you suffer from allergies?
Do you frequently feel tense and on edge?
Are you frequently constipated?
Do you have frequent pain in your shoulders and/or back?
Do you have weight problems?
Do you crave sweets, alcohol, or soda?
If more than 3 of these apply to you, your body may not be taking in enough oxygen."

one way to get more oxygen in your body is by practicing the breathing technique I mentioned in the blog entry INSTANT BELLY LOSS TECHNIQUE AND CLUES, on May 10th:

<>Better lung capacity technique. For those of us with lazy lungs or short torsos, increase your lung capacity by breathing in as deeply as you can, feel the air fill your lungs and go right into your belly pushing All the way out. Hold your mouth open and head back, keeping your airway open breathe in until you can hold no more and it feels like air can move freely in and out of your lungs just by holding the airways completely open. If you do it right it will seem like you could hold it like that forever, slowly let it out and repeat three times. Suck all the air in you can, fairly rapidly and slowly let it go out going limp like a rag doll. If you are seen just pretend you are stretching.

ANTIOXIDANTS WHY DO WE NEED THEM?
(2)"In order to understand antioxidants and cancer prevention, we must know what exactly antioxidants are and how they help our bodies.

Antioxidants are substances that prevent damage to cells caused by free radicals. Free radicals are cells that have lost an electron, thus are unstable cells. These free radicals basically steal electrons from other cells in effort to heal themselves, ultimately creating new free radicals in the process. By stealing electrons, it can cause damage to DNA, leading to the possible development of cancer.

Antioxidants search for these free radicals and lend them an electron. This stabilizes the molecule, thus preventing damage to other cells. Antioxidants also turn free radicals into waste by products, and they eventually get eliminated from the body. They also have the ability to repair previous damage to cells."...

"Where Can I Find Antioxidants?
Antioxidants are found naturally in fruits and vegetables. They also are contained in some meats. Some examples of fruits and veggies that are rich in antioxidants are:
Yellow and orange vegetables- Think sweet potatoes, carrots, pumpkin, papaya, guava, and cantaloupe
Green and leafy veggies, like turnip greens, spinach and kale
Other great fruits include strawberries, kiwi, cranberries, and plums
Great veggies for antioxidants are broccoli, red and green peppers, bok choi, and tomatoes"

A lITTLE MORE INFORMATION
(3)"As the name implies, antioxidants are substances that are capable of counteracting the damaging, but normal, effects of the physiological process of oxidation in animal tissue. Antioxidants are nutrients (vitamins and minerals) as well as enzymes (proteins in your body that assist in chemical reactions). They are believed to play a role in preventing the development of such chronic diseases as cancer, heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer's disease, Rheumatoid arthritis, and cataracts.
Oxidative stress occurs when the production of harmful molecules called free radicals is beyond the protective capability of the antioxidant defenses. Free radicals are chemically active atoms or molecular fragments that have a charge due to an excess or deficient number of electrons. Examples of free radicals are the superoxide anion, hydroxyl radical, transition metals such as iron and copper, nitric acid, and ozone. Free radicals containing oxygen, known as reactive oxygen species (ROS), are the most biologically significant free radicals. ROS include the radicals superoxide and hydroxyl radical, plus derivatives of oxygen that do not contain unpaired electrons, such as hydrogen peroxide, singlet oxygen, and hypochlorous acid.

Because they have one or more unpaired electrons, free radicals are highly unstable. They scavenge your body to grab or donate electrons, thereby damaging cells, proteins, and DNA (genetic material). The same oxidative process also causes oils to become rancid, peeled apples to turn brown, and iron to rust."

So, near as I can figure out, we need oxygen filled cells to function, but bad stuff from our environment attaches itself to the oxygen molecules that seem to be kind of "sticky", in a manner of speaking. These pollutants are bad for us and we need to loosen their hold in our cells by de-oxygenating the cells long enough for the free radical, those pesky little baggers, to run away and look for a better environment. I might be all wet, and since I'm not chemist I probably am, but it sounds good, eh? At any rate deep breathing is good and so is taking antioxidants or eating good antioxidant foods.
